When you’re a pet parent selling your home in Macomb County, your REALTOR® will probably talk to you about your four-legged (or two- or no-legged) family members, including what you’re supposed to do with them when you sell your home – but in the meantime, this guide explains.
What Should You Do With Your Pets While Your Home is on the Market?
First things first: Some people just don’t like animals, and others are allergic. Some people are even afraid of animals – even small ones – and that means your pets should go with you when you leave the house for showings.
In fact, some people don’t even want to know that pets live in the home. Your real estate agent will most likely suggest removing all your pet’s belongings, including food dishes and water bowls, when you leave the house. And if you have a litterbox, pet beds or pet toys, those should probably go, too.
One quick solution is to keep an empty laundry basket near your door. When your REALTOR lets you know that prospective buyers are on their way, whisk all of your pet’s items – blankets, toys, everything – into the basket. Put it all in your trunk, and head out. You can bring everything back in with you when you return.

Taking Your Pets With You When You Leave is One Thing…
What if you aren’t home to pick them up when someone wants to come by? What if you’re at work when your real estate agent calls to let you know there’s a buyer who wants to see your home?
Though you may want to limit your showings to certain times and days, your REALTOR will most likely talk to you about being as flexible as possible; that way, you aren’t missing out on too many potential buyers. You have a few options if you can’t leave work to pick up your pets each time someone wants to take a tour of your home:
- You can take your pets to a sitter
- You can board your pets or have them stay with a friend or family member
- You can hire a dog walker to swing by on short notice
