5 Tips for Making Your Move Easier on Your Dog

5 Tips for Making Your Move Easier on Your Dog

Moving is hard enough on humans, but it can be even harder on dogs. They often become stressed and anxious during the process, which can lead to all sorts of problems. Here are five tips for making your move easier on your dog.

5 Tips for Making Your Move Easier on Your Dog

Check out these five great tips for making your move easier on your four-legged family member:

  1. Get your pup used to moving supplies before you start packing.
  2. Stick to your routine.
  3. Squeeze in extra exercise.
  4. Give your pooch a relaxing space.
  5. Consider hiring a dog sitter on moving day.

Here’s a closer look at each.

Tip #1 for Making Your Move Easier on Your Dog: Get Your Pup Used to Moving Supplies Before You Start Packing

If you’re like most people, the idea of packing up all your belongings and moving to a new home is stressful enough. But for dogs, this process can be downright traumatizing. To make things easier on your furry friend, start getting them used to the idea of moving a few weeks before you actually start packing.

Bring out boxes and other moving supplies and let your dog sniff them and explore them. This will help them become familiar with the new objects and ease some of the anxiety they may feel when you start packing up your home.

Tip #2 for Making Your Move Easier on Your Dog: Stick to Your Routine

Another way to reduce stress for your dog during a move is to stick to their normal routine as much as possible. This means keeping mealtimes, walks, and other activities the same. If you can, walk your dog in the morning before you start packing and at night after you’re done for the day. This will help them stay calm and burn off some energy.

Tip #3 for Making Your Move Easier on Your Dog: Squeeze in Extra Exercise

If your dog is used to getting a daily walk, they may get antsy when they see you packing up boxes and furniture. To prevent this, squeeze in some extra exercise before you start packing and during the moving process. Take them on longer walks, play fetch in the backyard, or sign them up for a doggy daycare.

Tip #4 for Making Your Move Easier on Your Dog: Give Your Pooch a Relaxing Space

When you’re in the midst of packing, it’s important to create a relaxing space for your dog. This can be a small room or area where they can go to escape the chaos. Put their bed, food, water, and toys in this space so they have everything they need.

If possible, keep this space quiet and free from foot traffic. This will help your dog feel safe and relaxed during the move.

Tip #5 for Making Your Move Easier on Your Dog: Consider Hiring a Dog Sitter on Moving Day

If you’re really worried about how your dog will handle the move, consider hiring a dog-sitter for the day. This will take some of the pressure off of you and allow you to focus on getting settled into your new home.

If you can’t hire a dog-sitter or head to doggie daycare, don’t stress. You should put your pup in a closed-off room that the movers won’t need to go into. Make sure to label the door with a “Do Not Open” sign so your pup doesn’t make a dash for the hills.
